Art Blooms at Annmarie Garden This Weeend

Annmarie’s Sculpture Garden and Art Center will be the site of a three-day show featuring the work of floral designers from across the region.  This event, co-sponsored by Calvert Garden Club, will take place all day Friday thru Sunday, at 13480 Dowell Road in Dowell, MD 20629.

According to the announcement, “Each floral designer is assigned a work of art in the Main Gallery and asked to create an arrangement inspired by the art.  The results are  surprising, beautiful, and provocative – and not to be missed. “

While tickets are required for the opening reception, Friday from 7-10 p.m., admission to the show is free, except for park admission ($3/adult, $2/seniors).  Based on the photos from last year (Click on the link), it should be quite impressive.  In fact, I’m impressed they hold this show for three full days, after the recent experience of our standard flower show on a single day.  It’s a lot of work to plan and execute a flower show!

Annmarie Garden is a sculpture garden which integrates the natural setting and works of art along walking paths.  The land was donated to Calvert County in 1991 for this purpose, and Annmarie became a member of the Smithsonian Institutions Affiliations Program in 2003.  As a result of this affiliation, the Garden has been able to borrow more than twenty-five pieces of sculpture from the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorm Museum & Sculpture Garden. There is also an arts building and studio school, which opened in 2008, and that is where you’ll find the flower show exhibits.

So yes, Ladies, there will be air conditioning and protection from the weather.  What a fun field trip this would be for some of our members, and the drive is only about 90 minutes.

National Garden Club Convention in D.C.

The idea of attending a National Garden Club Convention has probably never crossed your mind.  But the site of this year’s convention is Washington, D.C., so why not go?

The program is filled with tours, seminars, and exhibits, beginning on Wednesday, May 25, and running through Sunday, May 29.

More information is available on the National Garden Club, Inc.’s website, including the full schedule and a pre-registration form.

Garden Club Donates Daffodil Bulbs for Crofton Library

Join your neighbors at Crofton Library on Saturday, October 23, for a day of beautification.  Wear your work clothes, bring your garden gloves and tools, and come prepared to weed, plant daffodil bulbs provided by Crofton Village Garden Club, spread mulch, and rake leaves.  Arrive at 9, and you’ll be on your way home by noon.

You’ve probably noticed how the grounds at Crofton Library have been less attractive lately than in the past.  That’s because county budget cuts have eliminated staff who would have maintained the grounds.  But we don’t have to settle for “ugly” in Crofton, when there are so many people and organizations willing to help.

Of course you can just show up on Saturday, but it would be helpful if you sign up at the Library Information Desk, call (410)222–7915, or email slbirdsong@aol.com so they know how many people to anticipate.  So far, the weather forecast is looking good for Saturday (Sunny, around 64 degrees), but the work-day will be canceled in the event of rain.

Can’t make it on Saturday, October 23? Mark your calendar for Friday, November 12, when this community effort will be continued.
