March Hostess Committee Ready for Annual Meeting

March hostess committeeCrofton Village Garden Club and the Blue Dolphin Inn haven’t yet announced whether today’s March meeting will be rescheduled, due to weather.  The federal government and local schools have already closed, so members are on standy-by and waiting for word from President Sally or Program Chair Marcia. The hostess committee is ready, however, if the meeting goes on.

Shirley Townes, Eleanor Saulino,  JoAnn Cook, and Margaret Woda  met at Glenna Kid’s house yesterday to create teddy bears out of carnations and dress them in Irish garb. You can see the ladies at work in this photo, taken by Margaret.  Just click on the photo to make it larger, if you like.

The new slate of officers is installed at the annual March luncheon meeting and, this year, a vote on updated bylaws is scheduled.

GREAT NEWS!

Garden club members braved the Spring snow to attend the March meeting and installation of officers.

Chef Pope Cooks w/ Herbs for February Meeting

Crofton Village Garden Club enjoyed a tasting party at our February meeting, thanks to award-winning Chef Zachary Pope of Roundz Gourmet Market and Catering in Gambrills.  He came armed with curley parsley, chives, basil, rosemary, chervil and mint to introduce us to their characteristics and demonstrate how to use them in our food preparation. The presentation was very informative and enjoyable, thanks to Chef Pope’s depth of knowledge and his personal style.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, a “taste” is worth more – and members enjoyed the opportunity to taste samples of his work.  Manyof us went home from that meeting, vowing to visit Roundz Gourmet Market for a larger serving of the delicious tomato basil soup he prepared for us.

Not surprising then, that so many members accepted Chef Pope’s invitation for a private lunch at Rounds on February 18. It was delicious!

Growing Orchids Without a Greenhouse

Jan - Ann LundyThe January meeting of Crofton Village Garden Club featured Ann Lundy, an award-winning orchid grower and a former president of the Maryland Orchid Society.

Ann came armed with many orchid plants, books, and information about various orchid societies and vendors, as well as an interesting presentation.  Many garden club members remained after the meeting to purchase plants and books from her.

It was a wonderful program to start off 2013.

Happy New Year!

Invitation:  Woodstream Orchids invites you to their 4th annual “January Thaw (or not) Event” on January 12-13, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  It’s the peak of the blooming season for orchids in the greenhouse, so this is a great opportunity to follow up on our newly-peaked interest in orchids.

White Christmas by Crofton Village Garden Club

Irving Berlin’s White Christmas inspired this year’s holiday decorations created by Crofton Village Garden Club  for the first floor study of Hammond Harwood House in Historic Annapolis.

Joan Miller chaired the committee, which included Cindy Hansen, Nancy Percival, Jean Davis, Lynne Malley, Mid O’Malley, Pat Stevenson, and  Shirley Townes.   They met twice to plan and prepare the decorations and joined other District II garden clubs on November 28 to dress the magnificent 18th-century Anglo-Palladian Hammond-Harwood House at 19 Maryland Avenue for their annual holiday greens sale and daily tours in December.

Saturday, December 1, will b e Greens Preview Day – the public’s first chance to see the holiday decorations and purchase a wreath and table decorations from boxwood, magnolia, and other materials gathered from the Hammond-Harwood House garden.  Doors open at noon to the general public, and the greens will be on sale until they’re all gone.

According to the Hammond Harwood House website, proceeds help to maintain this historic treasure, recognized by many as the preeminent home on U.S. soil remaining from the British Colonial period (1607-1776).  During its rich history over more than 250 years, the home, on the National Register of Historic Places, was owned from 1926 to 1949 by St. John’s College who used it for courses on the decorative arts.

From December 1 through 31 (but not on Christmas!) docent-led tours of the Hammond-Harwood House will last 45 minutes to an hour. The cost is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors and AAA members, and $4 for children. While Hammond-Harwood welcomes children, they recommend the tour for those 5 years and older who will likely understand that touching the fragile decorations and furnishings is a no-no.  To engage the younger members of your group, the staff has devised a Young Historians Hunt activity that kids can complete during the tour.

May Field Trip to Homestead Gardens

Forty-three members of Crofton Village Garden Club enjoyed a May field trip to the Homestead Gardens high-tech growing facility that is operated by Tidal Creek Growers.  The 100 acre site on Governor’s Bridge Road in Davidsonville, Maryland, contains outdoor growing areas and several large greenhouses where plants are nurtured from seedling to market-ready.

We learned from Horticulturist Gene Sumi that plants begin their journey to the shelves of Homestead Gardens and other retail stores as seedlings, plucked by machine from 72-plant flats and meticulously placed into pots. They spend the next few weeks and months in Dutch-designed greenhouses where computers control temperature, moisture, and light for thousands of plants with varying requirements.  The plants are labeled, monitored, fertilized and tended by a large staff of humans, as well.

Club members found it interesting to learn that young plants are stored near ground level, and watered from the ground.  When the water is drained after watering, it is recycled through a 17,000 gallon storage tank and filtered for continual re-use.  We were fascinated to imagine the roofs and sides of the greenhouses opening when weather and plant maturity are “right.”  This tour certainly gave garden club members a new appreciation for the beautiful plants we saw and purchased when we returned to Homestead’s retail facility after the tour.

Sincere thanks to Tidal Creek Growers, Homestead Gardens and Gene Sumi!

Crofton Gardeners Enjoyed May Day in Annapolis

On May 1st, fourteen members of Crofton Village Garden Club, dressed in raincoats and armed with umbrellas, trecked through Annapolis to view the yearly display of May Baskets.

After this delightful walking tour, club members joined the Garden Club of Annapolis at the Annapolis Yacht Club for their annual May Fair.  An interesting assortment of vendors displayed their goods and a delicious lunch was served with more desserts than anyone could comfortably sample.

A great day – and not a drop of rain, after all!
