CROFTON VILLAGE GARDEN CLUB PROJECTS
2011-2012

COMMUNITY BEAUTIFICATION:

  • Holiday Greens for Our Community (since 1969)
    Chaired by Bernie Robertson

    CVGC members decorate several public areas of Crofton with fresh evergreen wreaths for the holidays each year.  Visitors and approximately 30,000 residents of Crofton, Maryland, enjoy the fruits of our labor from this – our “signature” community service project

  • Hammond Harwood House (since 1969)
    Chaired by Joan Para

    CVGC partners with other District II clubs to decorate Hammond Harwood House for the holidays.  The Hammond Harwood House Association (house tour fundraiser) and visitors who have an opportunity to enjoy the period holiday decorations benefit from this project.

GARDEN THERAPY:

  • Honoring the Men and Women who Serve (since 2007)
    Chaired by Anna Dixon

    CVGC members create 120 patriotic-themed flower arrangements each year in November to honor the men and women who serve our country. 120 veterans at the Loch Raven VA Community Living and Rehabilitation Center, in Baltimore, MD, are always delighted to receive the colorful flowers and thank you note from our club.

  • Crofton Care & Rehabilitation (since 1990)
    Chaired by Audrey Kerge

    CVGC members conduct an annual hands-on workshop for patients at this local health-care facility.  This horticulture therapy project brightens the day for patients at Crofton Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center in Crofton, MD.

A STANDARD FLOWER SHOW:

  • “At The Library” (2011)
    Chaired by Sally Moore

    CVGC members held a standard flower show at the Crofton Public Library in Crofton, MD, on May 21, 2011.  The flower show provided an opportunity for club members to promote their love of gardening and floral design and educate the public on the many civic, educational, and environmental activities our club is involved in throughout the year.

CONSERVATION:

  • ProtectingOurAquaticEcosystem (New project 2011-2012) – A NGC Special Project
    Chaired by Pat Stevenson

    CVGC will partner with other Crofton community organizations to reduce and mitigate storm water damage to creeks, streams, rivers and the Chesapeake Bay through development of two rain gardens in the Lake Louise area.  Everyone who enjoys or relies upon the Chesapeake Bay aquatic ecosystem will benefit from this conservation project.

CIVIC INVOLVEMENT:

  • Crofton Library (Since 2010)
    Chaired by Camille DeVito

    CVGC donates, installs, and helps maintain plants near the Crofton Library in Crofton, MD.  Library patrons and neighbors benefit from our civic involvement in beautifying the Library.

  • Helping the Homeless (Since 2011)
    Chaired by Barbara Emden

    CVGC helps feed 35 homeless men from Arundel House of Hope in Glen Burnie, Maryland, while they are sheltered for seven nights in January/February at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Crofton, MD.

ROADSIDE IMPROVEMENT:

  • Crofton Village Garden (Since 2008)
    Chaired by Lynn Malley

    CVGC maintains a roadside garden created by the club in 2007 at the Crofton Village Green in Crofton, MD.  Residents and visitors in “Old Crofton” – the community bordered by Routes 3, 424, and 450 – enjoy this roadside improvement as they enter our community by car or walk the Parkway.

YOUTH INVOLVEMENT

  • Poster Contest  (Repeat a 2009 project ) – A NGC Special Project
    Chaired by Leigh Klaus

    CVGC conducts a Woodsy Owl / Smokey Bear poster contest to promote conservation and fire safety.  This will be educational and fun for students in Crofton Elementary Schools.
